About This Place

Grundy Lake is the Highway 69 corridor's granite rest stop perfected: a cluster of small Shield lakes just east of Georgian Bay's rock country, where the camping loops thread between waters close enough that families paddle from site to swim rock to site without loading the car. (A record note: our coordinates for this park drifted toward Huntsville and have been corrected to Grundy's actual junction country at Highways 69 and 522.) The natural-rock waterslides and jumping ledges on the Gut Lake side built generations of Grundy loyalty; canoe-in sites on the quieter lakes give a taste of interior tripping at training-wheel distances.

The park's position — the practical overnight between southern Ontario and the northeast — undersells its merit as a destination: sunset granite, loon arithmetic, and the Gut Lake trail's gneiss ridges deliver the Shield's whole aesthetic in an evening walk. Ontario Parks reservations; electrical loops for trailers, paddle-in for purists.

Best Time to Visit

Open season: May - October. June-August: Peak season with warmest weather, but expect full campgrounds — reserve well in advance. Bugs can be intense in June — bring repellent and a bug net. September: Arguably the best month — cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, stunning fall colours (especially in the hardwood forests), and thinner crowds. Shoulder months offer solitude but bring cold-weather gear.

Terrain & Topography

A cluster of small Shield lakes at the 69/522 junction: granite shorelines, natural rock slides, paddle-linked camping loops, and gneiss ridge trails — Georgian Bay's rock country in miniature.

Regulations & Permits

First-come, first-served sites available, but reservations recommended for peak season. Campfires: Bring your own firewood or purchase from camp host. Do not collect wood from the forest. Bear canisters or bear hangs required for food storage. Pack out all garbage — Leave No Trace principles apply. Dogs must be on leash at all times.

Nearby Services

Camp store on site with basic supplies, firewood, and ice. Nearest full grocery: Ottawa (1.5-2 hours). Bring all gear — rental not available nearby. Restaurant and pub in the nearest village for a treat meal.

Backcountry tent sites only — flat ground at designated spots. Nearby lodges and B&Bs for those wanting a roof overhead.

Cell Coverage & Safety

Cell coverage: No service — carry a satellite communicator for backcountry sites. Nearest hospital: Ottawa. Bear-safe food storage required. Bear sightings are regular — know what to do.
