Seasonal Tips

Book summer early; riverside sites go first. Paddle the Old Ausable Channel at dawn — the park's quiet masterpiece. Fall: savanna colour and emptied beaches. Winter: yurts, ski trails, and Huron's ice formations make the off-season case. Dune crossings only at marked points — the savanna-dune system is the rarity you came for.

About This Place

The Pinery protects a global rarity wearing a beach-park costume: one of the largest remaining oak savannas on Earth — open-grown oaks over prairie grasses, a fire-born ecosystem reduced to fragments continent-wide — rolled across ten kilometres of Lake Huron dunes near Grand Bend. (A record note: our data listed "Lake Michigan Access," an impossibility we've corrected — this is Huron's shore, and its sunsets have their own fan literature.) Three campgrounds ladder the park, including riverside loops along the Old Ausable Channel, whose slow water gives canoes and stand-up paddlers a sheltered second waterfront.

The savanna rewards slow walking — Carolinian birds, five-lined skinks, and spring wildflower windows — while the dunes demand the marked crossings that keep them alive. Winter is the connoisseur's Pinery: heated yurts, groomed ski trails, and the beach in glorious ice-sculpture abandonment. Ontario Parks reservations govern; summer weekends book at southern-Ontario speed.
