Primary Species
Seasonal Tips
June: ice-out sends lake trout shallow — cast spoons along the shorelines and off the Nisutlin Bay points. Summer: trout drop deep; grayling fill the gap, rising to dry flies at every creek mouth and along the delta edges. Pike wait in the back bays all season. September: trout return toward shoal water. Keep harvest minimal — a Teslin laker your size may be older than you.
About This Place
Teslin Lake lies along the Alaska Highway where it crosses Nisutlin Bay on one of the longest water spans of the entire route — a long, narrow lake straddling the Yukon–BC border, reaching about 213 m deep, with the Inland Tlingit village of Teslin on its shore. The Tlingit heritage here is living culture: the George Johnston Museum and the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre anchor the community, and the Nisutlin River delta at the lake's head is protected as a national wildlife area for its waterfowl.
The fishing is classic big-Yukon water: lake trout, whitefish, Arctic grayling, northern pike in the weedy bays, and salmon passing through the system. But Teslin teaches patience — territorial monitoring found the average lake trout here is 49 cm and fourteen years old, and one fish that size proved to be forty-two. Fish that old are irreplaceable on human timescales, which is why conservative harvest matters more here than almost anywhere. A Yukon angling licence is required; check current limits and the special rules for salmon.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Lake Trout. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fewer crowds and excellent catch rates.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.
Terrain & Topography
A long, narrow border-straddling trench reaching about 213 m deep, paralleled by the Alaska Highway and crossed at Nisutlin Bay. Cold, slow-growing water: rocky shorelines, a protected river delta at the head, and weedy bays that hold the warmth.
Regulations & Permits
A valid Yukon fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Check the current Yukon Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Lake Trout are strictly enforced. Barbless hooks are mandatory in this zone. Catch-and-release is encouraged for trophy-sized fish to maintain the healthy population.
