Seasonal Tips

Late June–July: lake trout cruise shallow after ice-out — shore casting near Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay genuinely produces. August: trout deepen; troll the drop-offs early, then switch to grayling on dries at the creek mouths when the wind builds. September: short, golden, and productive before freeze-up. Any season: the icefield winds turn the lake dangerous in minutes — stay close to shore and watch the southwest sky.

About This Place

Kluane Lake is the largest lake lying entirely within Yukon, a huge sweep of glacial blue pinned between the Ruby Range and the front wall of the St. Elias Mountains, with the Alaska Highway tracing its southwestern shore past Destruction Bay and the Kluane First Nation village of Burwash Landing. It is also a lake being visibly reshaped by climate: in 2016 the retreating Kaskawulsh Glacier abruptly rerouted the Slims River (A'ay Chù) away from Kluane, cutting off a major inflow and dropping the lake's level — a piece of geological news that made journals worldwide and left fresh shorelines you can walk today.

The fishing remains what it has long been: lake trout in cold, clear water, Arctic grayling at the creek mouths and in the Kluane River outflow country, and whitefish over the flats. Afternoon winds pouring off the icefields are notorious and arrive fast — mornings belong to boats, afternoons to shore rods. A Yukon licence is required, and parts of the watershed fall under Kluane First Nation and national-park arrangements, so check access notes for where you plan to fish.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Lake Trout. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fewer crowds and excellent catch rates.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.

Terrain & Topography

A vast glacial lake between the Ruby Range and the St. Elias front, its water level lowered since the 2016 rerouting of the Slims River inflow. Cold, clear, wind-raked water with gravel shorelines, creek-mouth fans, and long exposed reaches along the Alaska Highway.

Regulations & Permits

A valid Yukon fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Check the current Yukon Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Lake Trout are strictly enforced. Barbless hooks are mandatory in this zone. Catch-and-release is encouraged for trophy-sized fish to maintain the healthy population.
