Tent Ridge is a rewarding day hike in Alberta, offering scenic ridge walk, peaks views, alpine meadows across 15 km of trail. With 900m of elevation gain, this demands solid fitness and preparation.



The trail winds through Rocky Mountain foothills, prairies, badlands, passing through diverse forest ecosystems and scenic viewpoints. On clear days, the panoramic views extend for hundreds of kilometres. Tent Ridge regularly appears on lists of Canada's best hikes, and for good reason — it's the kind of trail that fundamentally changes how you see this country.

Trailhead is approximately 1.5-2.5 hours from Red Deer. GPS: 51.3°N, 115.3°W. Last 10 km is gravel — all vehicles can manage in dry conditions. No public transit — you will need your own vehicle.

Stationnement et accès

Paved trailhead parking lot with space for 30+ vehicles. Fills early on summer weekends. If the lot is full, you may need to park up to 1 km back on the road. Free parking at the trailhead. No facilities at the trailhead — use the restroom before you arrive. Don't leave valuables in your vehicle.

Season: July - September. June: Spring freshness, waterfalls at peak flow, and long daylight hours. July-August: Prime hiking season. Snow may linger on alpine passes into early July — check conditions. September-October: Cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking. September is many locals favorite month on the trails.

Terrain et topographie

Distance: 15 km. Elevation gain: 900m. Difficulty: Advanced. The trail follows a well-marked path through Rocky Mountain foothills. Rocky and rooty sections require sturdy footwear — trail runners are fine for experienced hikers, but boots recommended for most. River crossings may require fording in early season. Scrambling sections near the summit — hands may be needed.

Free access — no permits needed for day hiking. Dogs must be on leash on all trails. Stay on marked trails to protect fragile vegetation. Bear spray is recommended and available for purchase at the park entrance. Pack out all waste. Leave No Trace.

Information kiosk at the trailhead (seasonal). Nearest town with full services: Red Deer (1.5-2.5 hours). Gear shops in Red Deer for last-minute supplies. Local guides available for hire — recommended for technical routes.

Day hike — no overnight facilities on the trail. Front-country campgrounds at the trailhead for pre/post-hike camping. Hotels, B&Bs, and hostels available in Red Deer.

No cell service on the trail — carry a satellite communicator for emergencies. Nearest hospital: Red Deer. Bear and cougar country — travel in groups, make noise, carry bear spray. Carry the ten essentials: navigation, sun protection, insulation, illumination, first aid, fire, tools, nutrition, hydration, and emergency shelter. Let someone know your route and expected return time. Turn back if conditions deteriorate — the mountain will be there next time.
