Seasonal Tips
Late August–September: sheep season in the high country — glass from ridgelines, expect company at the famous basins, and go deeper. September: elk bugle in the valley bottoms; moose in the willow flats as the rut builds. October: snow squalls own the passes — horse hunts push later than backpack hunts should. No motors, no exceptions: build your physical season in summer, because Willmore audits fitness ruthlessly.
About This Place
Willmore is Alberta's promise kept: a wilderness park north of Jasper where the rules themselves shape the hunt — no motorized access, period. You enter on foot or horseback, and everything beyond the trailheads at Rock Lake, Sulphur Gates, and Big Berland belongs to those willing to earn it the old way. That single rule preserves what draws hunters here: bighorn sheep on the high grass slopes, mountain goats in the cliff country, elk and moose in the valley willow, and a sense of hunting as it was before quads.
Horse culture runs deep — outfitters with generations-old trail permits pack hunters to wall-tent camps a day or three from pavement — while backpack hunters make lighter, harder versions of the same trips. Alberta licences and seasons apply, with sheep and goat opportunities tightly managed and the general rules layered with Willmore-specific ones. The pack-out is the hunt's second half: a ram taken two valleys in is a logistics problem you must have solved before the shot. Plan for weather from all four seasons in any September week.

Best Time to Visit
Primary season: September - October. Early season (September) offers warm weather but bugs — bring repellent and patience. The rut period (late October to mid-November) is prime time for big game — bucks are active and responsive to calls. Mid-season typically offers the best balance of game activity and weather. Dawn and dusk are the most productive hours — plan to be in position 30 minutes before legal shooting time.
Terrain & Topography
Foot-and-horse-only wilderness north of Jasper: grass-slope sheep country, cliff-band goat terrain, willow valley bottoms, and pass-linked drainages — wall-tent country measured in days from the trailhead.
