Seasonal Tips

September: blacktails in the alpine and high cuts before rains push them down; bears heavy on the salmon reaches. October–November: the blacktail rut in the low regrowth — still-hunt the edges in the rain, because dry days empty the woods. Roosevelt elk: apply for years, treasure the draw. Gates and radio roads run on industry time — current access word beats any map.

About This Place

The North Island is BC's blacktail kingdom — the logging-road labyrinth from Campbell River to Cape Scott where Columbia black-tailed deer, the coast's pocket-sized and maddening deer, live in clearcut regrowth so thick that hunting them becomes a discipline of edges, light, and patience. Black bears grow enormous on the Island's salmon streams and berry slopes and carry a reputation among coastal hunters as the continent's most huntable big bears. Roosevelt elk — the Island's giant — remain draw-only under tightly limited LEH, a tag counted in lifetime odds.

The defining infrastructure is industrial: thousands of kilometres of active and deactivated logging mains, gated and radio-controlled in the working divisions, opening and closing with the industry's rhythm. Rain is the climate, not the weather. BC Region 1 rules govern; non-residents require guide outfitters. Wolves and cougars share the woods in numbers that keep the deer educated and the hunts honest.

Best Time to Visit

Primary season: September - November. Early season (September) offers warm weather but bugs — bring repellent and patience. The rut period (late October to mid-November) is prime time for big game — bucks are active and responsive to calls. Mid-season typically offers the best balance of game activity and weather. Dawn and dusk are the most productive hours — plan to be in position 30 minutes before legal shooting time.

Terrain & Topography

North Island logging country: clearcut regrowth mazes, salmon-stream bottoms, alpine ridges above the fog, and rain-ruled coastal forest — blacktail-and-bear range under industrial access rhythm.

Regulations & Permits

A valid British Columbia hunting licence and appropriate tags are required. This area falls under Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) regulations — check the current British Columbia Hunting Regulations for season dates, bag limits, and weapon restrictions. Draw/lottery tags may be required for certain species — apply early (spring deadline). Hunter orange/blaze orange is mandatory during firearms season. Report all harvests within the required timeframe.

Nearby Services
