Seasonal Tips

Mid-September: moose calling in the willow flats and cutblock edges — check the current antler rules before you commit to a bull. October: bears on the last berry slopes; mule deer along the dry southern breaks. Water access opens what gates close: the lake chains are the district's quiet highways. Region 7A rules have moved with the moose decline — read this year's, not last year's.

About This Place

The Omineca is BC's lakes-district moose country — the plateau between Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, and the Omineca Mountains where the boreal interior spreads flat, wet, and willow-rich in exactly the proportions moose require. This was long one of the province's dependable moose regions, and remains a serious one, with the honest caveat that BC's interior moose declines touched the Omineca too: seasons and antler configurations have been adjusted over the years, making the current Region 7A synopsis the document that defines the hunt. Black bears thrive throughout on the region's berry-heavy cutover mosaic.

Access runs on forestry mains and the lakes themselves — Stuart, Trembleur, the Nation chain — with boat approaches beating truck approaches wherever water touches willow. Mule deer thicken toward the dry southern fringes. BC licensing applies with non-residents requiring guide outfitters; Fort St. James' fur-trade history reminds hunters this country has been producing meat and hides for two centuries of recorded seasons.
