Seasonal Tips

Winter: apply for the réserve draws — Matane sectors are the province's hottest ticket. Late September–October: moose calling in the foothill valleys, with the rut sharpened by the first cold fronts off the Gulf. Bear: spring and fall over bait via the territories. Absolute rule: caribou are protected, period — in the summit zones, identify beyond all doubt and give the herd's range the respect its survival requires.

About This Place

The Gaspé peninsula carries some of the highest moose densities in North America — the Matane wildlife reserve's draw is legendary for a reason — and one absolute rule every hunter must carry in: the Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou, the last caribou south of the St. Lawrence, survive as a critically endangered remnant of a few dozen animals in the summit parks, fully protected, never hunted, and deserving of wide berth from anyone in the high country. Know your silhouettes before any shot on the plateaus.

The hunt itself is the peninsula's autumn heartbeat: moose in the Chic-Choc foothills and river valleys through réserves (Matane, Dunière), zecs, and pourvoiries; black bear on the beechnut and berry slopes; and a deer presence thickening along the coastal lowlands. Draw competition for the famous réserve sectors is fierce — Matane's success rates built its mythology. Québec zone seasons, the two-hunter moose permit, and each territory's registration apply. Sea-wind weather changes fast off both coasts; the mountains make their own.

Best Time to Visit

Primary season: September - October. Early season (September) offers warm weather but bugs — bring repellent and patience. The rut period (late October to mid-November) is prime time for big game — bucks are active and responsive to calls. Mid-season typically offers the best balance of game activity and weather. Dawn and dusk are the most productive hours — plan to be in position 30 minutes before legal shooting time.

Terrain & Topography

Chic-Choc foothills and river valleys ringed by working forest: high moose densities in the spruce-birch slopes, with protected alpine summits above — sea-influenced weather from two coasts.

Regulations & Permits

A valid Quebec hunting licence and appropriate tags are required. Hunters must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and hold a valid PAL. This area falls under Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) regulations — check the current Quebec Hunting Regulations for season dates, bag limits, and weapon restrictions. Draw/lottery tags may be required for certain species — apply early (spring deadline). Hunter orange/blaze orange is mandatory during firearms season. Report all harvests within the required timeframe.
