Seasonal Tips

September–October: early season deer move on predictable forest-edge patterns and the weather is kinder. November: the rut — the island's classic hunt, with bucks moving all day; dress for Gulf of St. Lawrence weather that changes hourly. Packages control the calendar here more than regulations do: Sépaq and outfitter dates book out a year ahead. No bears on this island — food storage rules are about weather and foxes, not bruins.

About This Place

Anticosti is the deer hunt every Canadian hunter should do once. Henri Menier released 220 white-tailed deer on his private island in 1896–97; today the herd is conservatively estimated at 166,000 — roughly 21 deer per square kilometre, the highest density in eastern North America — on an island with no wolves and, remarkably, no bears: Anticosti's native black bears were extirpated after the exploding deer herd stripped the berry crops they depended on, one of ecology's starkest documented cascades. A small introduced moose population persists at low density.

Most of the island is managed by Sépaq Anticosti, which runs the hunt as a package system — lodges, camps, guides, and multi-deer licences — with a smaller outfitted private sector alongside. You fly in; there is no bridge and no casual access. The hunting itself is rifle work in open spruce forest, peatlands, and river canyons, with November's rut the storied window. A Québec licence applies within the packages; book seasons ahead, not weeks.

Best Time to Visit

Primary season: September - December. Early season (September) offers warm weather but bugs — bring repellent and patience. The rut period (late October to mid-November) is prime time for big game — bucks are active and responsive to calls. Late season hunts (November-December) can be brutally cold but offer the best trophy potential. Dawn and dusk are the most productive hours — plan to be in position 30 minutes before legal shooting time.

Terrain & Topography

A 220 km limestone island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence: open spruce and fir forest heavily browsed into park-like understory, peatlands, and dramatic river canyons cut to the sea — all shaped by the highest deer density in eastern North America.

Regulations & Permits

A valid Quebec hunting licence and appropriate tags are required. Hunters must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and hold a valid PAL. This area falls under Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) regulations — check the current Quebec Hunting Regulations for season dates, bag limits, and weapon restrictions. Draw/lottery tags may be required for certain species — apply early (spring deadline). Hunter orange/blaze orange is mandatory during firearms season. Report all harvests within the required timeframe.

Nearby Services

Nearest gas and supplies: Montreal (1.5-2 hours). Stock up completely before heading in. Nearest game processing facility is in Montreal. Hunting guides and outfitters operate in the area — highly recommended for first-time visitors. Ammunition and last-minute gear available at the general store.

Where to Stay

Hunting camps and outfitter lodges available with meal packages. Backcountry camping is permitted on Crown land with no reservations needed. Motel options in Montreal for those who prefer a warm bed.

Cell Coverage & Safety

Cell coverage: Very limited — carry a satellite communicator (InReach, SPOT, or similar). Nearest hospital: Montreal. Bear encounters are possible — carry bear spray and know how to use it. Always hunt with a partner when possible and file a detailed trip plan. Hypothermia is a real risk in late season — dress in layers and carry emergency shelter. Wear blaze orange — it saves lives.
