Seasonal Tips

Spring: walleye where the Bécancour feeds the lake — current seams at dusk after the opener. Summer: pike in the bays all day; muskie hunters work big baits along the weed edges with figure-eights at the boat — check the muskie season and size rules first. Fall: the muskie window widens as the water cools, and the walleye tighten on the river channel. The chain connects — fish moving between William, Joseph, and Truite make current the pattern that never stops paying.

About This Place

Lac William is the middle jewel of the Bécancour River's chain of lakes at Saint-Ferdinand, downstream of Lac à la Truite and upstream of Lac Joseph, in the Appalachian folds south of Thetford Mines. Its provincial inventory carries the chain's signature surprise: muskellunge — the Bécancour system is one of the few muskie waters on this side of the St. Lawrence — swimming over a supporting cast of walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, brown bullhead, and brook trout recorded where the cold tributaries come in.

A river runs through it, and the fishing knows: current-touched narrows at the inlet and outlet concentrate walleye, the weedy bays hold pike and the occasional muskie shadowing them, and the village waterfront at Saint-Ferdinand puts launches, a beach, and services within minutes of the best water. Muskie here are a patience game with their own regulations — seasons and minimum sizes differ from everything else in the boat, so read the zone summary twice. A Québec licence is required; release any muskie you're not absolutely certain is legal, and handle them like the decades-old fish they often are.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Barbotte brune. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fall colours make this an especially scenic time to visit.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.
