Primary Species
Seasonal Tips
Spring: brown trout feed on the shallow nearshore shelf in April–May — flat-line stickbaits in under 5 m of water before it warms. Summer: Chinook drop to the thermocline; downriggers and dipsy divers over 20–35 m of water are standard. Late August–September: mature kings stage off the river mouths before the run — first light is prime. Fall: lake trout move back onto the shoals as the water cools.
About This Place
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes by surface area but holds the biggest salmon program in the system: a stocked Chinook fishery that turns the north shore into charter-boat country from spring through the September spawning runs. Brown trout patrol the warming nearshore shelf in April and May — small boats casting or flat-lining tight to shore do well before the fish slide deeper — and a long-running binational restoration effort is slowly rebuilding the lake's native lake trout stocks.
The structure is simple compared with Huron or Superior: long sand and clay shorelines broken by river mouths, with the fishing organized around the thermocline for most of the open-water season. Ports from the Niagara Bar east to the Bay of Quinte offer launches, with the Niagara Bar itself the most famous single piece of water on the Ontario side. A provincial licence is required, and salmon and trout limits are specific — read the current regulations summary before you go.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Lake Trout. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fall colours make this an especially scenic time to visit.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.
Terrain & Topography
Long sand and clay shorelines broken by river mouths, shelving to a basin 244 m at its deepest; the Niagara Bar's shoal complex is the most storied structure on the Ontario side.
Regulations & Permits
A valid Ontario fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Check the current Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Lake Trout are strictly enforced.
